From Kevin's ground-balancing tip

Make the ground disappear — then go deeper

You just saw Kevin quiet mineralized ground so targets can speak. Grab the free 75-page Metal Detecting Masterclass and turn that one skill into a full field system.

Ground balancing is so important and also the most challenging.
Joe Kinney · masterclass reader

What you just saw

Quiet the dirt. Hear the targets.

Ground balancing is how you teach your detector to ignore mineralized soil — so iron chatter and hot ground stop masking the signals that matter.

Balance until the ground goes quiet

When ground balance is dialed in, the mineralized dirt stops yelling at your ears — so real targets can speak up.

Hot ground needs a repeatable routine

Factory baseline → faint threshold hum → pump and balance → sensitivity at the edge of stability. Same sequence every time conditions change.

Noise is not treasure

Fast swings and max sensitivity turn hot soil into false chatter. Slow the coil, re-balance on new patches, and keep the coil in the dirt.

One tip opens the door — mastery fills the bag

Ground balance is a foundation skill. The free masterclass walks you through settings, threshold, coil control, and field habits that stack on top of it.

Turn one tip into a complete field system

Kevin's 75-page Metal Detecting Masterclass expands what you just watched — settings, threshold, ground balance, coil control, and recovery — so you leave the patch with habits you can repeat.

  • Ground balancing and mineralized “hot ground” setups that stay stable
  • Threshold, sensitivity, and frequency choices you can repeat in the field
  • Coil control and swing habits that protect depth and target clarity
  • Recovery and patch-reading routines from 55+ years of Kevin’s detecting

Kevin's book is the best explanation of how detectors work that i have ever read. The information is easy to understand and applies to all detectors. If you are a detectorist that struggles wirh tuning your detector in difficult ground this book will help you. Thank you Kevin Hoaglin.

I’m currently reading your book for the second time. Once I purchase my detector I know I will be reading your book again and again. I’m excited to get out with my detector and fine tuning it, following your instructions as well as your tips and tricks out in the field.

I haven't made it through the whole class yet. I already feel more confident with my detector and understanding of what is happening. Kevin explains things in an understandable way and gives tips/drills to do to improve your detecting. I have it on my phone so I can look at checklists while I am getting ready at the site. Then I turn OFF my phone and put it in my bag with my lunch, leave the bag there, and walk 20+ feet away to where I am going to detect. Thank you Kevin for all the info in the class!!

Next step

Now that you can make the ground disappear… here's where to swing the coil

Skills stick when you practice on real mineralized ground — not a backyard patch. GPAA membership opens member claims nationwide, and Gold Trails field events with Kevin take the same lessons into the dirt at Italian Bar.
